Data Centers
Smart Detection for Safer Air
Data centers, which house critical IT infrastructure, depend on uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems with lead-acid batteries to maintain continuous operation. These batteries can emit hydrogen gas during charging and discharging, posing a significant explosion risk if the gas accumulates. Even small leaks can create hazardous conditions, especially in confined or poorly ventilated areas. To mitigate this, real-time hydrogen monitoring is vital and mandated by safety regulations like OSHA 1910.1000, NFPA 70, and the International Fire Code (IFC). INTEC’s solution provides continuous hydrogen gas detection, enabling early leak detection and compliance with safety standards while protecting both personnel and equipment from fire and explosion risks.
Lithium-ion batteries used in rack systems are becoming more common in data centers, edge deployments, and modular environments. While lithium-ion batteries are generally safer than older chemistries, thermal runaway events caused by overheating, damage, or internal faults can still release toxic and flammable gases, including: carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen fluoride (HF), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and hydrogen (H2).
Energy Storage Systems (ESS) store electrical energy for later use, functioning like large, rechargeable batteries for power grids, buildings, data centers, or industrial facilities. Because ESS units hold megawatts of energy, more cells increase the risk of thermal runaway. ESS fires can escalate quickly and release toxic, corrosive, and explosive gases. Codes and standards such as UL 9540A and NFPA 855 require or recommend gas detection in many installations. Gases to monitor in ESS installations include: hydrogen fluoride (HF), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hydrogen (H2), methane, ethane, and ethylene.
